5.0 Detailed Instructions

5.1 Synchronization Modes aka Time Stamp

Synchronization are used to compare local and server files. 4 modes are proposed and depend on the use you make of iSynch. These modes are used if the user did not exclude the file from the transfer.

5.1.1 'none' Mode

No method concerning the date is used to compare files. In all the case the file will be transferred except if the user asked to check the size also, in this case the file will be transferred only if their size are different. it's the ultimate method to obtain a true mirror.

5.1.2 'normal' Mode

The method compares the file date on the server and in local, if the file to transfer is more recent or if their size are different and the user asked to check the size, the file will be uploaded.

5.1.3 'difference' Mode

This method takes again the preceding method by adding a possibility of difference in time between the server and the macintosh. As mac and the ftp do not have the same hour, it can be a problem during synchronizations, for example:
The server ftp have 10 min in advance, it is 10h in local but 10:10 on the server, therefore if the user upload its file at 10:00 its date on the server will be 10:10, if the user modifies the file at 10:05 and try to upload it, iSynch won't do it because the file on the server is more recent (10:10 > 10:05). The solution is then to use this mode by specifying a difference of 10min.

5.1.4 'clever' Mode

This method is the best if the user holds only one mirror of the site locally. iSynch uses the date of last synchronization, in Upload it's the date of the files locally, in Download it's the date of the files on the server. In the case of upload, if a file was modified or is new, its state appears directly in the Local tab.

5.2 Action Icons

The action icons can have a different meaning depending if they are used in the Local tab (A) or in the preview window (B).
In the Local tab, they are only an indication and not an action. They are used only if the mode 'Clever' is selected and for Uploading only. In the preview window they represent the true actions that there would be at the time of a true Upload or Download.
The concept of 'file' used here corresponds as a file or a folder.

5.2.1 No Icon

A. No action is envisaged on the file, if the file does not exist on the distant server, it will be uploaded.
B. No action on the file.

5.2.2 A Red Point

A. A new file is in the local tree, it will be uploaded.
B. A new file is in the local (remote) tree and it doesn't exist the remote (local) tree.

5.2.3 A Small Arrow

A. The local file has been modified, it will be transferred.
B. The local (remote) file has been modified and will be transferred.

5.2.4 A Trash Can

A. Can't happen.
B. The file will be deleted during the synchronization. (with mirror option)

5.2.5 A Red Cross

A. (see Local Tab)
B. The file will be ignored during the synchronization.

5.2.6 A Red Line

A. (see Server File)
B. The file will be ignored during the synchronization.

5.3 Server File

It's easier to describe what's a server file with an example :
* if for example it exists a folder on the server 'etc', this folder contains files owned by the Web admin and therefore be must not be delete if mirror is selected, in the same way it is not useful to downloaded them, you just have to create a server file "etc" which tells iSynch to ignore this file/folder during synchronization. This is the same as creating a local folder "etc" and excluding it from download but this is less visible and lets space for errors because with the server file, iSynch will always ignore it.

If the user deletes any local files, iSynch will ask to the user if he wants to automatically replace the deleted files by server files accelerating the task.

5.4 Log Levels

You have 4 options of detail:
  • None - No log at all.
  • Brief - When the synchronization started, stopped, and if it was successful or not, if not the error message is also logged.
  • Normal - Same as Brief, plus any file transfer, removal of files/folders are logged.
  • Detail - Same as Normal, plus any FTP command Sent or Received.

  • 5.5 Dialogs

Most dialogs have shortcuts, you can press the command key + the first button letter to activate the button.

    5.5.1 Open Progress

This dialog show you the progress when you open a document, iSynch has to go in each directory to check the folder's structure.

    5.5.1 Open Progress

This dialog appears if you removed a file in you local directory and open the related document (Or you ask to update the folder where the file is). You can select 'Apply to all' and then choose you answer which will be applied as the default answer for all the removed files. (See Server File)
